Slime for Clouds

"Slime for Clouds" is the first dream I had in advance of taking the picture. It was also the first dream I ever had that was just an image -- no story, no narrative of any kind, just an image that included two green clouds above a familiar seascape. The dream made no sense until one day, a few months later; I was shooting a picture of the Coast Guard Station reflected in a pond that had algae floating on top. The algae formed two perfect clouds that swam into my lens. I later recognized them from my dream but I took the picture when the red roof turned to velvet against my skin and the white shingles felt as soft as Santa’s beard. This image is included in Patricia Lynn Duffy's wonderful book Blue Cats and Chartreuse Kittens.

Homage to Ellen McLuskey

Kandinsky-ish

I watched the water until the pink turned to satin against my skin. When I felt the circles dilate as they formed and reformed, I became one with the motion, and then free of thought, I snapped the shutter. A few days later, I came upon a postcard that gave me a jolt of recognition and excitement, for the painting on it looked just like my image –- archetypically, anyway. When I turned it over and saw that the artist was Kandinsky, my only question was whether he had the same form of synesthesia as I.

Curved Corners, Milan

I love the sensation of curved corners, particularly when as in this image they are made of velvet. I took this reflection in Miilan.

Velvet Steps

I took this picture when I felt the steps turn into velvet, which occurred when the color on the edges changed to a lighter shade of green. You can see other spots of light that elicit the same texture response on the underside of what I'm calling a step.

I have noticed that any change in tone -- be it sound or sight -- elicits my synesthesia. So what is Synesthesia? Perhaps it is a sensitivity to changes in tone so subtle that they go unnoticed by other people. That would explain why I photograph images that are never hidden but which are usually unseen.

Pink Icing

"Pink Icing" is a good example of how I make my choices when I take an image based on what I feel. In this case, what I felt was pink satin against my skin but I named the image "Pink Icing" because when I looked at it later, I saw that it looks like pink icing. There is also a little cello music on the right produced by the brown and black colors.
